Kodak moments

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I was just flicking through some of the other photos I have and found a couple of interesting ones of things you see on the road that you may not expect…

wide load

You can see with this one that there isn’t a lot of road left!

tea pot

…and this one is just bizarre because it isn’t every day you follow a full tea set up the highway!

This video if of driving past the “Cloud factory” as my daughters call it…

A view to die for

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I’ve recently downloaded a free program from Microsoft (you won’t here that often) called ICE that stitches together multiple images to produce a panorama.

Crossing the Darling Downs

The road from Millmerran

Sunset on the road

Not a bad result for a bunch of photos taken at 100 kph.

I’ve figured out linking to the image now, so if you click in the last photo you can see a larger version.

A small technical hitch

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

I normally post to my blog via email from my Nokia N95 phone and hadn’t realised that my posting had stopped until today. The reason… I had recently upgraded my WordPress install and the footer.php file had been changed so it wasn’t picking up my emails. All fixed now.

Please explain

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’ve lost count of how many times this has happened… I’m driving through a highway town; like Tennterfield, Tamworth or Scone, with nothing but clear road behind me and a hatchback will duck out in front of me from a side road causing me to back off if not brake. The offending vehicle will then proceed up the main road, well below the speed limit only to turn off to the other side of town. The best bit is the fact that they swing wide to turn like they are 19m long.
They are like rabbits, desperate to cross the road with no regard for safety.
Please oh please bring in new legislation to say we can run over a random sample of stupid drivers just to set an example. I promise to be gentle!

False advertising

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Road safety advertising leaves me wondering what the authorities are really trying to achieve. Signs that read “Passengers die too” lend themselves more to an Iranian airline than a reduction of road accidents. If the same marketing gurus were used by McDonalds their ads would be more likely to say “wait with screaming kids for a muppet to serve you consistenty shite food” and imagine a Tampax ad, it certainly wouldn’t be beach volley ball.
Maybe the road authorities should start looking at putting a positive spin on the road safety message rather than the current fear campaign, after all, when it comes to negative outcomes we generally believe “it cant happen to me”.

Ol' Sydney Town

Monday, November 16th, 2009

In Sydney again, waiting for the express run back to Muswellbrook and Tamworth.

Last week when I was down here I got caught in really bad traffic trying to get through the Lane cove Tunnel. The video below shows why, I hope the horse transport was empty, I wouldn’t want my race horse sitting in those fumes.

"When I grow up"…

Monday, November 16th, 2009

While I was being unloaded this morning when a small boy, all of two or three, was walking past with his father and stopped to look at the truck, he was obviously fascinated. I asked his father if the boy would like to have a look inside.

He got lifted up into the cab and had a good look around before spotting the air horn cord and making the correct gesture and sound. He hopped down with his face beaming.

His father pointed to the fuel tank and air filter which the little boy correctly identified before saying thank you and continuing on his walk.

I hope he had a good day because his excitement and enthusiasm made mine.

Long daze indeed

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Last week was a short week after having five days ‘off’ to move house. It certainly wasn’t a rest.
I kicked off again on Tuesday night and managed two runs to Brisbane, taking in Moree and Inverell for good measure. I finished up the week on Saturday morning having done 2700kms.
I had a break down too. Nothing major, blew a radiator hose and dumped enough coolant to trip the computer into shutting down the engine. Sounds good in theory, that the engine is saved from catastrophic failure by an over protective computer, but the reality is a little different. Trying to find a safe place to park a 19 metre long truck with no engine or power steering causes a great deal of torsional force in the buttocks.
So here I am again, heading south from Brisbane on the express run to Inverell. I should get there by 3am after getting up at 2 this morning. I had all the required rest breaks but couldnt get any sleep at the depot as it is too busy a place.
Not to worry, Ill be all done in a couple or so hours, like I said… long daze.
Cheers,
Mat
