Documenting the trip

Monday, February 1st, 2010

I’ve been playing with recording my trips on video for a little while but have struggled to get decent footage with the Nokia N95 so have reverted to using a webcam hooked up to the laptop.

Finding the right software was hard and I have ended up using the logitech software that came with the webcam. The hotkey button on the side of the camera allows for easy control without being distracted from driving. Then I had trouble with too much brightness that the camera couldn’t compensate so I supa-glued a piece of sunglass lense over the front. Night filming won’t be possible I don’t think but the quality at night was poor any how.

It will be interesting to see what sort of disk space this consumes, time will tell.

Here’s my first effort, running past the Botany Bay foreshore on the way into the port.

Now to get some footage of the idiots on the road.

A view to die for

I’ve recently downloaded a free program from Microsoft (you won’t here that often) called ICE that stitches together multiple images to produce a panorama.

Crossing the Darling Downs

The road from Millmerran

Sunset on the road

Not a bad result for a bunch of photos taken at 100 kph.

I’ve figured out linking to the image now, so if you click in the last photo you can see a larger version.

A small technical hitch

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

I normally post to my blog via email from my Nokia N95 phone and hadn’t realised that my posting had stopped until today. The reason… I had recently upgraded my WordPress install and the footer.php file had been changed so it wasn’t picking up my emails. All fixed now.

A trying time

Moving the blog to a new domain has ended up being quite a task.

The theory is all fairly simple but it’s remembering all the details and
as usual with any thing computer… “Garbage in garbage out”. Note to
self, document everything, put it all in a safe place and remember where
that is, I must be getting old!

Cheers,
Mat

King of my domain…

I’ve changed the domain for the blog to “www.diaryofatruckdriver.com.au”, it’s tidier and easier done now than later. If anyone spots a problem let me know please.

Running the blog

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I’ve established this blog on server space I lease in Canberra which I also use to host various websites I have created through the efforts of my business IT Made Easy which I operate in my spare time.

I have used WordPress as the software with a couple of tweaks.

Updating the blog is performed on my laptop using Bigpond wireless broadband over the Telstra Next G network. Whilst Telstra has it’s cons it certainly has the coverage I need out here on the road.

I can also send email updates from any computer or from my Nokia N95. I have established a secret email address with the added security of a filter on the server that only accepts emails sent from my account to be passed on to my blog, ensuring I don’t end up with some hackers posts appearing.
